Can anyone recommend a fabric upholstery cleaner which is worth a damn?

In my experience, the best way to clean fabric upholstery is to remove it and toss it in the washing machine, but that's a lot of work especially for a daily driver which is nearing it's end. So, has any one had any luck with some manner of cleaning agent/shampoo?
