I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with my automatic '88 240. A mechanic said it was rear wheel bearings and gave me a very high estimate so I decided to do it myself. I started a thread here in this forum and got a lot of very helpful tips and advice and I appreciate everybody help.
Today I thought I'd localize the noise myself from the outside, before I've only heard it from inside of the car. The sound I was looking for is directly connected to the speed of the axel, kind of like whiny power steering but it follows the speed of the axel. I borrowed a floorjack and put it undernieth the differetial, jacked it up and got the wheels spinning in drive. I honestly know nothing about how the differential work but It does seem wierd to me that only right rear was spinning. Brakes are dragging on both wheels but I can easily spin left rear myself, also I could hear gears skipping!? No loud sound just kind of a ticking noise from both sides. I haven't noticed any driveability problems but the sound. What's going on here? Any theories?
Thanks
John
