looking at a another project 88 245- headgasket? 200

Loosing my 86 244 this month to the facts its time for it to be parted out due to rust and a bent front crossmember/oil pan. Been looking for my next project to part my 86 into.

Looked at a $500 88 245 today with considerable needs all around except the body is acceptably decent. Not the original paint job but its clear the front passengers fender was hit since the spacing above the front light is larger and out of spec on that side.

Looked at a nice oil mess on and around the waterpump. Was told the car overheats unless the heat is turned on. The dipstick had rust on the upper portions. Anyone know if that is a definite sign of a leaking head gasket? Didn't see oil in the coolant reservoir. The car doesn't start at the moment. All lights come on but there is not attempt for the starter to do anything. Suspect the automatic trans' safety switch.

I left thinking I could find a better car. But wondering if maybe I shouldn't just give it a go and rebuild that engine. But my main concern about replacing a head gasket is I don't know how much high temp driving has been done. Wondering if the pistons can be damaged to where you can't do a head gasket or would I better off just replacing the engine with my 86 that also has a M46 attached to it. Swing the whole drive train and engine in one go? Any thoughts?
