Stiff steering when cold rack or pump 200

The more cars you own the more problems you have.On my 90 240DL the steering is stiff going to one side,I forget whichside.This happens in the morning when the car is cold.Also at night when I get out of work.The steering wheel will turn ok to one side but really hard in the opposite direction.Is this a sign of a bad rack or steering pump? I could not find anything in the archives during my brief search.Thanks,
