No start on Friday 13th 200

So my wife calls me at 1 am in the morning and tells me that shes stuck in the city because our '88 240dl won't start. She tells me that it started up normal just that the headlights didn't work, she turned it around and noticed it got weaker and suddenly died. Now it's completly quiet when she turns the key but all the lights on the dash board and hood lights and all that works. Any ideas?
