Battery hold down bracket 700 1990

I had to replace the battery in my 1990 740, but I can't figure out how the hold down bracket is supposed to work. Haynes and Chilton are both vague, and I didn't see anything in the 700/900 FAQ or anywhere else on Brickboard.

Thanks for any help.
