Steering Column Splines 200 1990

I have a 1990 240DL Wagon, and I was wondering if anyone knows how many splines there are where the steering wheel attaches to the column. After having the alignment done more than once, the wheel doesn't return to center, though the car pulls straight with the wheel in its resting position (there's a history of repaired suspension damage). So, I was thinking I might just pull it and shift it by one "notch." But I don't want to go to the trouble if that might just set it off in the other direction.
