Function of brake cruise switch? 200 1989

Hi,
I've got an 89 240 that I added a cruise unit several years ago and recently it is functioning intermittently. I have checked all the vaccum lines and most of the switches and everything seems ok but I'm curious about the brake circuit.

I'm not sure I understand how the brake part of the cruise circuit is supposed to work. It connects to the switched side (to the brakelights) of the brake light switch and then it goes to the cruise brake switch. (I think this is correct based on the manuals I have.)

I've connected a test light at the connector for the cruise computer unit. When I apply the brake pedal, I have current at first because the brake light switch connects and the brake switch for the cruise is still closed. When I depress the pedal further, the cruise switch opens and I loose the current to the connector.

Is this how it is supposed to work? It seems peculiar to me.

Thanks in advance.
Lyle
