Wing mirrors - re-colouring 200 1992

The grey-looking black(?) wing mirrors on my white wagon look sadly worn from the sun and has lots of fine wispy lines from wind blown sand/dirt.

Before I actually start re-colouring the mirror housing, can anyone tell me if it is the plastic itself that's black or is the colour painted in?

It will determine whether I'll use a plastic dye or a spray-on paint with built-in plastic primer.

Thanks.
