I have a 1988 244 DL with the M47 transmission. It has been running fine with no problems until last week when it died on me in traffic. I coasted to the side of the road, where I cranked it several times, with the engine stating each time but immediately dying. I let it cool for ten minutes, finally got it to stay running by revving the engine at red lights, and drove it home. Later that evening, I took went out and started it up with no problems and drove it about six miles without event. Thinking that it was just a fluke, I let my wife drive it the following morning, and it stranded her with the same symptoms.
Here's what I know:
- Car dies immediately with Air Mass Meter plugged in, but idles with it unplugged
- With the car idling with AMM unplugged, the engine will die if I press the gas pedal quickly, but will stay running if I lightly tap the the gas pedal and increase the RPMs by a few hundred at a time
- Fuel pressure regulator is only one year old
- I swapped out the AMM with two other used ones of unknown condition with no change in symptoms
- I didn't find any cracks or breaks in the ductwork or vacuum hoses
- I removed and inspected the Idle Air Control motor, and it is clean and not stuck
- I replaced the throttle position sensor with a used one of unknown condition with no change in symptoms
Any suggestions? Sorry for the long message, but I wanted to include everything I know ahead of time. I have a feeling that I will probably end up buying an AMM, but I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something else to try before i do that or take it in to the import shop (at $78/hour!) Thanks in advance!
