Brake light switch 200 1990

I replaced the rear brake light switch (tough job but made easier with help from brickboard). When I reconnected the instrument panel my check engine light is on and the engine idles high. Engine will constantly rev high then low. If I remove the largest connector on instrument panel (black round connector) engine will run normally but I have no instrument panel light, temp gauge, turn signals work but don't display on instrument panel...Good news is my brake lights now work.

Any suggestions as to what could be causing this problem?
