Diagnosis help - intermittent stalling 200 1988

My 1988 245 has started stalling from time to time. It's a manual 5-speed transmission, and the car tends to stall when I shift from 1st to 2nd. After I shift and let the clutch out, it feels like I've run out of gas. The engine limps along, and flooring the gas pedal does nothing. Sometimes the car stalls, sometimes not. Restarting the car, or waiting 30 seconds or so, will cure it.

My father thinks it's the air mass meter - any other ideas? I already replaced the spark plugs and wires. Many thanks for the help.

Tim
