Gas gauge fault. Also: tach wanted 200

My gas gauge is not working, and I am going to bypass the temp comp board.

As these two things are unrelated, while I have the cluster out, I would like to attempt to at least diagnose the gauge fault. It has never worked since I've had the car. I have already read this thread: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=768229&show_all=2 and obvs that would be the next thing to check. is there anything else I should look for while the cluster is out?

Oh, can I reset the Service Reminder light button with the cluster out, or does it need to be connected? I can't reach it and it's annoying.

My former mechanic flat-out insisted I needed a new sender. End of discussion. This is one of several reasons why I won't go to that &$@% thief anymore.

Oh, and if anyone has a tach for sale, I'm interested. I saw one in the classifieds and emailed the seller, but I never get any response from these "bbanon" addresses so I'm not even sure they work. I'd really like to avoid fleabay.
