speedomitor stuck at one speed ? 140-160

i just started driving my 1974 144 three weeks ago the odomitor stoped turning and now the speedoneed has been working on and off and now is stuck at 35 mph i had taken the speedo cableoff and put it back on but no good , I take it i need a speddo I can change it buy it self right ?
