945 heater matrix - leaking? 900 1991

Hi Guys,
any advice on the following subject most welcome: I have antifrezze in the drivers side footwell so I guess I have a coolant leak somewhere in the heating circuit? I will have to remove the carpets to get them cleaned and dry (antifreeze may have taken the paint off the metal I guess), and I think I will have to get the heater matrix out and check it - and the hoses.
My manual (Haynes) is very sketchy about carpet removal/heater matrix removal, so any advice about this or about my diagnosis most welcome,
