Trunk Handle Release Spring 95 960 Sedan 900

Yesterday I noticed the trunk handle release spring is quite soft on my 95 960 sedan. The car was rear ended in December 08, and I am concerned this is related. Does the handle have a tension spring I can replace, or a rod that can be straightened?? The only pictures I have are of an entire lock unit, which would be too expensive.
