'76 Air Pump 200

My '76 244 developed a worrying noise after a couple 4hr highway trips on the weekend. I am pretty sure that the bearings in the air pump are going or gone- either way, the thing is squealing like crazy. Of course most 240s don't have this beast, so I am thinking of just getting rid of it. Does anyone know the proper way to do it? A Quick look last night in the dark made it seem like I'll need a new exhaust manifold...

If I *do* need parts, will the car run ok if I just take the belt off of the pump?

Thanks
