'87 and '88 wagons with intermittent running problems

I have two 245 wagons: '87 (216K) and '88 (266K). Both are having intermittent running problems and I sure could use some help on where to start investigaing/repairing. Both have new fuel pump relays.

'87: This one runs very rough when cold -- stinky exhaust, rough idle and low power. Gets better when warmed up. Refused to start a couple of times -- turned over fine but wouldn't start. The fuel pump sounds terrible -- loud and uneven, "whiney". I picked up a new fuel pump but hate to put it in unless I can be more sure that's the problem.

'88: This one mostly runs OK, but "hiccups" at random times. This feels like fuel is temporarily shut off but lasts only for a second. I've ignored the hiccups, but it failed to start the other day, just like the '87, so I guess I'd better figure it out before my wife and kids get stuck somewhere.

Any thoughts or things to check would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, -- Larry B.
