Head Bolt Removal Question? B6304S Engine 𖜸 / S90] S90-V90 1998

Hi all: I have a head bolt removal question. I’m removing the head off of my 1998 S90. B6304S engine.

I’m to a point that I have the engine torn down and the cam carrier and cams off of the top of the head.

I’m in the process of removing the 14 head bolts.

So far (in reverse sequence of bolt installation) I have “cracked” each of the bolts. When loosening, I’m using a 24” breaker bar with 1/2” drive and a 14 mm socket.

I can feel and head each bolt “give” with a crack sound as I loosen each one first.

As I go back for a 2nd pass to remove each bolt it appears that I have to put a lot more torque on them.

I started do the 1st one and then stopped, I’m afraid I my snap off the bolt head off.

Prior to loosening them I took a large brass drift, and placed it on the top of each bolt head (down in the hole/recess) and gave it 3 gentle, but firm taps.

I did the same again once I got the socket on them, prior to loosening them

My question is this.

1. Is this extra torque I have to exert normal?

2. Is there some other trick to not breaking any bolt heads off?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks … Mr. Tool
