How to stop ATF leak where cooler line elbow screws into tranny 200 1979

When fixing a leak in a cracked tranny cooler pipe I must have disturbed the elbow that screws into the tranny and have now got a moderate leak even though the elbow seems secured well by its locknut.
According to a Haynes drawing there are some (special? tapered?) O-rings between the (bottom?) of the elbows and the tranny body. The orientation of the elbows is set by the cooler pipes so that the elbow and pipe flange can mate tightly. Then the elbow is secured in the correct position by a locknut.
I've never come across a situation where the force that is supposed to seal (squash) the O-ring depends on the elbow orientation and number of turns that the elbow is screwed in, particularly when the elbow thread is a coarse pitch.
Is it better to do the fix using silastic or Loctite assuming that I can "dry" the thread that the elbow screws into? Or can silastic or Loctite be used on "wet" (ATF) threads? Or should it be used just on the threads of the locknut plus fit a copper washer between the locknut and the tranny body?
I haven't yet bought any O-rings or removed the elbow since need advice on how to proceed.
