Timing Belt Adjustment / Deviation. Why ?? 700 1988

1988 740 Wagon. Monday evening my timing belt broke. Replaced it on Tuesday. First time I ever replaced a timing belt. Went well and car is running fine so far. I aligned 3x marks(cam, crank, and auxiliary)correctly. I noticed that on lower outside cover there were some marks/lines and numbers(10 to 30 if I recall). What is this meant for ? To deviate from standard proper timing ?? I aligned crank gear mark to engine extrusion mark as I thought and read was correct way to do it. What would be reason to deviate from that ??? Thanks.
