Failed to start..suspect fuel pump? 700 1991

1991 740 Regina...just one in tank fuel pump. Would not start yesterday so I suspected the fuel pump as I did not hear the usual momentary whiirng sound from the pump pressurizing the system to be ready for engine start..I got the usual clicks from the fuel oump relay but swapped it out nevertheless with the same result occuring..no start! As a matter of fact the first start attempt was with an initial start which quickly died..this occurred for a couple of times then after the engine would just turn over..no firing...So this morning I decide to investigate a bit further and check for voltage at the connector in the trunk...four wires..pink brown whit and black...I infered that pink is hot , black ground ..the others sending unit signal???? There is a fuse ..in the holder (ash tray removed) No.1 which is for fuel pump and injectors. I removed it and put it back in each time hearing the clicks from the FPR and from another relay I suppose in the engine compartment. I decided to start and then I got the Whirring sound and the engine started !!!. Great!!! So now I decided to check voltage at the connector in the trunk again and supprisingly I am not getting a reading (12V ?) from the pink wire..So what gives ? Doesnt the pump work continuously after engine start? Could the Crank sensor be part of this problem also..Any suggestions are welcomed..I feel sort of insecure driving mow..cheers
