Hi all,
First post, so I apologize if I leave out necessary info. I'm not only new to the boards, but new under any hood. Before the last couple of weeks, I knew enough to add fluids and clean the battery terminals.
My 88 740 turbo automatic has been having intermittent no starts which are getting less intermittent. Following the FAQ, as well as info in www.stepbystepvolvo.com's no start guide, I'm working my way through the likely suspects.
I've ordered a new radio suppression relay (part #1323592) as one of my troubleshooting steps. Until it arrives, I'm wondering about the suggestion from the FAQ:
"If you suspect that your radio suppression relay is faulty try switching the leads with the electric cooling fan relay if your car is so equipped."
I can't seem to find the cooling fan relay to see if it's the same part number. The only suggestion I've found is that it may be side to side with the radio suppression relay, but I found only one at the suggested location (left side of engine compartment, near inner fender).
So, assuming I've found the radio suppression relay (and not the coolant fan relay), where is the coolant fan relay?
Just to clarify, this is the coolant fan relay, which would control the fan at the radiator, right? I've seen it referred to as the cooling fan, and didn't know if that made a difference - if it might refer to the fan that blows into the cab. Sorry if that's a total newb question. Again, I *am* a total newb.
I know it's kind of odd to ask about a testing procedure after I've ordered a new part, but I figured worst case I'd have a backup. In the interim, I'm wondering if the swap test might get me home if I'm stranded.
Which brings me to two follow up questions:
1. If I were to swap the two relays, is it safe to drive home like that?
2. there's a second test suggested in the FAQs, which is to take off the relay and jumper the connection. Again, would it be safe to drive like this? or safe to get it started and - while running - reconnect the relay?
The 740 has been a second car for us, but for various reasons, is suddenly my only option for getting to work in the morning for a couple of weeks, and unfortunately, this coincides with the no-starts becoming suddenly more frequent.
Glad to provide any info I might have left out, and thanks in advance. Also thanks for the amazing forums. I've already picked up so much.
