I noticed that the inside edge (towards the engine) of my serpentine belt was fraying, and I read in the 700/900 faq that when that happens 'replacement of the tensioner is called for.' So I went to FCP groton and bought a new tensioner and a new serpentine belt (6PK1642). The new belt was incredibly hard to get on, and a bit shorter than the old one. Is this normal? Do they stretch out eventually? Would FCP groton steer me wrong? I had the VADIS printout of the belt routing, so at least I know it's on right.
If it's too tight, is there a way to tell? Is there a 'right' position for the tensioner to be in? With the new belt the tensioner appears to be engaged about half way at idle, and with the old one it was pretty close to slack.
