We just completed a 2000+ mile road trip in my girlfriend's 1985 240 wagon. Before the trip, we had the following work done:
* Recharged and repaired the A/C system (well worth the money considering the 100+ degree temps we encountered)
* Replaced all 4 drive belts
* Changed the diff. and trans. fluids.
* Cleaned overdrive strainer
* Serviced flame trap
She gets regular oil changes, and had her rotor, cap, plugs, and wires replaced in November.
The car is in fantastic shape, and regularly returned 30+ mpg even with the A/C on and going over several high mountain passes with a fairly full load. Everything worked flawlessly, and she impressed many of my college friends who would never imagine taking such a long trip in a car with nearly 300k miles.
The car is such a pleasure to drive long distances. A compliant ride and relatively long wheelbase coupled with somewhat overpowered steering makes eating up the miles incredibly easy. Comfortable seats and a new Alpine deck/speakers with iPod connections made the day pass quickly. We covered 670 miles yesterday, with temperatures above 90 degrees all day long. Just a magnificent, solid, car.
After letting the car sit all day today (she needed a rest), I am having trouble getting the car to start. I think she may be protesting all the miles and the heat. The starter turns, and sounds normal, but no ignition. Any ideas on how to wake her up?
Thanks to all of you for your advice in preparation for this trip. We enjoyed every mile.
Aaron
