Tapping blockon 960 for head bolt 900 1997

Hi,
One of the head bolts had corroded to the block in the bottom of the threads and made a bit of a mess on the way out. I want to Helicoil the thread but it is out of reach for a regular Helicoil tap. Has anyone done this? Any tips on how to turn the tap once the square gets below the surface of the block? I'm thinking of getting a 3/8" tap socket but I can't find any info on the socket OD to make sure it will fit in the counterbored hole.

Perhaps I'm making it all too complicated?
