Question on fuel sending unit replacement

Planning on replacing the fuel sending unit in my '89 240 this weekend. The instructions in my Bentley manual say: remove hoses from the top of the pump/sender assembly. Next, from under the car, disconnect the fuel return hose from the metal return line and plug the return line opening. Is this second task really necessary? I don't understand the reason for disconnecting the return line under the car.
