check engine light 200 1989

i drive a 1989 240 dl stick shift with 249 thousand miles on it. its been a constant project, with me being able to do most of the repairs myself. but today as im driving down the road, the check engine light comes on. i didnt notice any difference in performance, but that light came on. i cant afford to take it to a shop, so i was wondering what the causes of that light coming on could be. note: i do drive semi-aggressivly. any ideas??
