Gauge temperature sensor wiring 700 1989

I had to replace the wiring harness connector for the gauge temperature sender, however I'm not sure which wire goes where. I thought the polarity didn't matter, since this is in effect a variable resistor, however, a mechanic mentioned that it was important but he did not remember which way they went. If I am looking at the sensor, with the curved part of the connector up, does anyone know which side the yellow/black and yellow/white wires go on?
