So it seems that my steering rack has been shot, and requires replacement. I get a lot of free play, and strong vibrations when i brake. My local Volvo people have said that i probably need to replace the rack, at about 800 for parts & labor.
Any idea if there would be a way for me to do this cheaply, whether it is at home in my driveway this summer, or if i could find one from the pick & pull? My instincts tell me that this would be a job too tough for me to handle.

This car is getting more and more expensive to maintain and clean up. My rear right wheel's studs have been cross-threaded, probably by some u^*#%* mechanic. How tough would that be to fix?
