240 Sedan headliner removal 200

I want to replace a headliner. I removed seats and pulled one out of a parts car through the back door but it crinkled a good bit. It's usable but on the edge. I'm afraid that putting it in the new car will destroy it.

I see in a 2004 thread here that backlight removal is recommended. I'd hate to do that.

Has anyne replaced a headliner without removing the backlight and without damaging the headliner?
