One coil/shock success and one need for wheel problem diagnosis... 200 1989

Thanks BB...today I changed out my original shocks and rear coils for Sachs Advantage and IPD overload coils. I got to the first goofy pressed bolt into bottom coil retainer cup and of course it spun. I thought that was the end of that upgrade until I came inside, jumped on the BB and found the "wedge chisel under the cup" method and it worked like a charm on both sides. Changed them out in about an hour and a half.

I noticed my left rear rotor is pitted out pretty bad. The right side looked real nice. Here's the issue though...

Later, I hopped into the car and took about an hour drive in the hill country with my fat dog in back to check out the handling. Everything was great. I stopped for gas and smelled this weird chemical smell (coming from the car) I had experienced a few times before. When I got home 45 min later I smelled it again. I went to the left rear wheel and pulled the wheel cover off. The wheel was blazing hot and so was the part of the rotor around the wheel studs (I didn't touch the rotor itself cause I knew that would be sizzling). I went to the right rear wheel and the same areas were all warm, but NOT blazing hot light the left side.
The fronts rotors were warm, but again, not hot like the left rear.
The smell is definitely coming from the left rear.

I should add that it kinda doesn't look like the left rear rotor is even getting any wear from pads rubbing on it. Kinda rusty looking AND pitted.

Where might I start troubleshooting to figure this out? And is the rotor trashed if it's pitted out real bad?
