How to remove little plastic trim pieces on wagon roof 745 700 1990

These little trim pieces are almost at the rear corner of the roof on each side, above the gutters. I'm not sure if they are supposed to divert water into the gutter or what.

I'd like to paint these as the paint has worn away, exposing the white plastic.

Is there an easy way to remove them or should I mask them off in place to paint?
