timing belt / blown 960 engine 900

Hi,
Well the dreaded thing just happened, timing belt broke today on our -93 960 with 86 000 miles. What sucks is that I had just bought a new timing belt a few weeks ago, but had not yet done the job....well my own fault for delaying things....

Is there any point in even trying to replace the belt at this point - I know it takes a few hours...or is it just a waste of time on this engine?
Just wondering if there are any cases when the engine is not damaged with valves in to pistons? Logic tells me lethal interference must always happen when belt brakes on these engines....

Any ideas on where to find a good replacement engine in northern California?
(I am in Marin county, just north of San Francisco)
I guess junkyards?
Do the recyclers normally take your damaged engine in trade? Or how do you get rid of the old engine? The engine ran really strong until this (and no oil consumption), not sure if it is worth rebuilding since I guess it would be very pricey....

Thankful for any ideas.....
