It seems and feels like my Reverse gear is slipping, but only when the weather is hotter. When I place it into reverse and let off the brake, the car starts to go backwards as it should, but it's very, very slow and appears to be slipping. If I give it some gas, it suddenly kicks in and and WHAM it accelerates hard.
I'm fairly certain the transmission is going bad, but I want to be certain before I decide to 'give up' on the car (drive it until it's dead.) Other than this, there are no other problems with the car shifting. I flushed out all the old tranny fluid using the cooler return line and replaced it with approx 12 qts of fresh dexron iii/mercon. Doesn't appear to have made a difference. So now I'm looking into it possibly being my tranny mount... Probably not, but the mount is cheap to replace. The last time I changed it was back in 2002, so the tranny mount in there at the moment is roughly 5 years old.
How often do these things go bad? The shifter appears to move during hard braking and acceleration, but not a whole lot. I already replaced all of the shift linkage bushings about 1-2 years ago so it shouldn't be the bushings going bad.
If it turns out that the transmission is in fact going, then I'm going to drive it until it's completely dead and then call it quits. The car has had a great, but it's time for me to move on. If that happens, I may give it to someone for dirt cheap on Brickboard for parts. There's a lot of good stuff in here including nice new lowering springs, new shocks and struts, and an excellent set of Bridgestone Potenza G 009 tires. :) The springs, shocks, and struts themselves are easily worth $400.
