Since my generator die a ocuple weeks ago, I've been putting off converting to an alternator, because I had no idea how much time would be involved... This past weekend, I stated out with a '63(block)+'67(head)B18, a 60amp alternator and a mounting bracket kit for my conversion...
Step (1) disconnect the battery
Step (2) crack open a Black Butte
Step (3) disconnect the 3 wires from the stock 25amp generator
Step (4) use a 1/2" wrench to remove stock tension arm
Step (5) remove stock belt
Step (6) use a 9/16" wrench to remove pivot bolt below generator
Step (7) discard old generator
Step (8) disconnect + remove voltage regulator (?) mounted on passenger side fender
Step (9) use a 1/2" wrench to remove stock generator mounting bracket from block
Step (10) mount oh-so-simple conversion bracket (purchased from PMX Alternators in Portland, thanks again VOLTECH!) to mount new alternator
Step (11) determine correct pulley alignment and mount new alternator
Step (12) run to Home Depot to pick some 1" steel flat bar stock for new tension arm
Step (13) cut 10" length of flat bar, drill block mounting hole, cut channel in opposite end for tension sliding purposes...
Step (14) mounted tension arm + washers (for alignment purposes)
Step (15) connected 4ga lead to battery + 4ga bround to body
Step (16) worry about AMP idiot light later, let's give her a test drive!
Step (17) remove/replace lower radiotor hose that I just cut through with the new alternator...
Step (18) remove radiator and lower mount bushing (at center of cross member)
Step (19) bend lower mounting bracket + mount radiator approx. 1" lower so that lower hose clears alternator!!
GOLDEN!!
Total time 4 hours... not bad... definately satisfied!
