Brake Booster Check Valve 140-160

Just bought and installed a used check valve on my brake booster (1969 144s, B20b, twin SU HF6's).

Even though the check valve "tested" good (by sucking on it), once installed, it rattles at idle.

I am of the impression this indicates the valve is bad, correct?

Anyhow, the replacement for this is in-line vacuum valve. I am wondering if what one does is to merely splice this into the hose, leaving the Volvo check valve in the booster, broken as it is.
