Transmission Cooler 140-160

Noticed my BW35 in my 68 144 doesn't have a transmission cooler. Haynes manual seems to suggest that earlier models didn't. Not a good thing for an automatic transmission I would think. The Haynes manual shows the BW35 should have the ports for a cooler. My radiator was replaced before I got the car. I see no signs that there were cooler lines in place. Since my radiator is in good shape I was considering finding a small transmission cooler and mounting it in front of the radiator. If I did so, would it be best to use steel lines back or could one use rated flexable hose?

In the long run I might gather up what is needed to replace the BW35 with a M40 or M41.
