Attach a bicycle to the 240 roof rack? 200 1986

Hi! So I am a grad student (read: poor) moving from Sacramento to Chicago. I want to take my bike (a lightweight Fuji road bike/10 speed whichever you prefer) and while I could go out and buy a fancy roof rack, why can't I just pop the front tire off and bungee the frame (with back tire on or off) down real good to the factory roof rack that is already on my '86 240 wagon? Is this a terrible idea? Has anyone tried this?
