Speed shift handle is falling apart, can I replaced it? 900 1993

My 93-940 automatic gear shift handle is cooked and ugly, there are plenty of good ones in the junk yard but I haven't figured out how to remove the part and replace mine. I thought of putting like a condon or a sock to cover it as a temporaray solution, is it interchangeable with another one from a 960 or so?
Any feedback will be appreciated.
