Temp gauge testing 200 1986

The temperature gauge on my 240 is dead, the arm never moves below the absolute lowest postition. I'm assuming if I ground the wire attached to the sender the gauge will move all the way up telling me the sender is bad, correct?

Also the oil level is about 1/2" above the full mark on the dipstick from the place that changed it last - should I be concerned and drain some of it?

Thanks ....
