Advice needed on reattaching fuel line 200 1990

Thought I'd post this again, since my original post got buried pretty quickly - busy week for brickers now that the weather is opening up!

Because my fuel filter was apparently installed with an impact wrench, I had to pull the whole fuel filter & main pump assembly off in order to get it into the bench vise. I've got the filter replaced and am ready to reinstall the whole assembly but there's one issue. I had to snip the fuel line heading forward to the engine off at the burr fitting that exits the filter. Unfortunately, this is the nylon stuff that won't go back over the burr fitting. Can I just butt the end of the fuel line to the fitting and use an equally high psi-rated piece of neoprene (or other hose) to act as a sleeve over the joint, fastened with a couple of good compression clamps?

Researching a bit through old posts, I found the idea of using a heat gun to soften the nylon tubing enough to get it over the burr.

Any thoughts welcome.
