We finally had nice weather again in Minnesota and I spent the afternoon putting my 745 turbo back together. The car had a couple of failed exhaust manifold gaskets which I've now replaced.
Unfortunately, two things broke while I was putting everything back together. The first problem is one of the thre studs at the turbo/downpipe interface broke off and can't be removed (so far as I can tell). I plan to drive the car to a mechanic tomorrow to get that problem fixed.
The second, and seemingly larger problem is that one of the exhaust manifold studs feels stripped out. Somehow, the corresponding manifold nut will sping with very little pressure (on a 3/8" socket wrench). How far up the creek am I on this one? Can a mechanic heli-coil in a new manifold stud, or should I park the car for another month and go looking for a junkyard 8v head? (or should I give up on the car?)
