Mystery resolved - check engine light with blinking upshift light 200 1990

1990 244 DL

I'd gone back throught the archives looking for the latest of Junior's problems - after the exhaust was repaired, the check engine light was on, and I thought it only the faulty O2 sensor code stored from when there was a hole in the header pipe. Mechanic and I didn't know about the OBD, so he unplugged the battery and then plugged it back in, which turned off the check engine light, only to have it come back on, with the upshift light blinking along side it.

A couple of other people had posted a similar problem, with no real solution offered. The only thing I got out of it was to check port 1 of the OBD, as it was a transmission problem.

Well, I got out the handy-dandy Bentley, and after puzzling through the index looking for error codes, figured out that I was looking for the phrases "fault code" or "self-diagnostic program".

I found the section for checking the check engine codes for L-H fuel systems (section 241-5), and, after my farmer friend told me that I actually do have an OBD on Junior (Paul didn't have one), I got a quick hands-on lesson with Mary's OBD.

I drove back to my mechanic's to try Junior's system out. After discovering I need to find a cover for my OBD unit, I followed instructions for the check engine light, which used port 2. My Bentley was on my arm, open to the appropriate page.

Code came up 121, air mass meter signal fault. No other faults registered. After I cleared the codes, I checked the air mass meter, and either I had forgotten to connect it or it had come undone... once the connection was made, I turned on the engine, and no check engine light or blinking upshift light came on.

I immediately commenced with celebratory WOOHOO! and small circular victory dance! (Small only because it was muddy, and I wanted Junior's first mudbath to be one he drove through, not because I splashed it on him. ;-) I love free fixes!

Lesson for the day - the blinking upshift light does not necessarily mean a transmission fault.

I hope this helps someone else!

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can get Junior on the road!
