Water Pump (B200E) 200 1989

Hi All, from a 'first timer'!

Recently lost all coolant on a very short trip of about a mile. Managed to get the car home. Fault was with the radiator - well past its 'use by'! Anyway I have replaced the rad, along with hoses & the thermostat.
After firing up all seemed well until the car was properly warmed up and it developed a knocking noise. This appears to come from directly behind the centre of the radiator. Could this be the water pump? I was advised that the thermostat could be the culprit, but have confirmed that it is not by removing it and running the engine.
I think I should be able to replace the pump (bit of a novice)but would like to be able to confirm the problem first. Seems odd that there is no knocking when cold.
Anyway, difficult to diagnose over the web I know, but all advice welcome.
Thanks in advance.
