144 Power Steering Update 140-160

If you guys remember, I was in the midst of getting power steering installed on my 74 144. Well, I got all the stuff measured up and mounting brackets made for the pump and reservoir and everything bolted on perfectly. I have an extra steering shaft that was shortened by someone who does driveshafts, and it came out well. So here we go ready to bolt everything on and getting all excited when we were stopped dead in our tracks...PS gearbox will not bolt into the existing holes on the chasis rail!

What happened? I thought boxes from the 164 and 144 were interchangable. In fact, there's another 74 144 in town with the PS transplanted from a 164, and it was a bolt on operation. His PS unit came FROM a 74 164 (which may be why all the mounting holes on the box lined up with the holes on the chasis rail). The only thing I can think of is that the location of the mounting holes varied from year to year. I have no idea from which 164 year is my box.

We are fabricating an adapter to mount the box and hope that it will all work out...and I thought the gearbox was the least of my worries for this project. Apparently, the guy who is fabricating the adapter has done a few before for some 122s who wanted power steering. The only thing was that the PS gearboxes that they used are from the old Mitsubishi Monteros (Pajeros in some countries).

By the way, I drove the other car with the PS...its gooodd.
