83 240 engine/trans mods 200 1983

Just bought an 83 240 wagon, 2.3 4 spd. I plan on pulling another motor/trans to rebuild while I do a few little things to the car then swap in the new motor/trans. I've built a couple of motors, all Fords. The Volvo internals seem simple enough, anything to look out for?
Also, which years/models can I pull a long block from to use as a core?
Where can I find info on basic performance mods like port jobs, cams etc? Obviously it's an old wagon so I don't expect miracles but I have a thing for sleepers.
Will a 5spd bolt up? If so which years and models?
This forum is laid out a little different than what I'm used to, any tips for getting around or other good places to find info would be greatly appreciated. Matt.
