How to check brake shoe condition? 120-130

Is there a reliable way to check the condition of one's rear brake shoes without removing the brake drum? I know I've never changed mine in the 10,000 miles or so I have on the car, but if I can avoid the time and expense of getting a drum puller and yanking them off just to check, I'd like to. Is there some hole to look through back there that I can't find?
