Sewing leather: crude seat repair 700 1990

Because the leather seats on my 740 are pretty well shot, and the rest of the interior is pretty creaky, I plan on simply buying some generic seat covers, giving the car a good vacumming, maybe a bath, and not worrying too much about it.

But... the leather on the driver's seat is bad enough that a 5 inch split has developed, and the foam is starting to wear.

Maybe I'm crazy but, I'm thinking of making a run to a local Tandy Leather shop (tandyleather.com) and seeing if it's feasible to hand-sew a new patch of leather right on top of the most damaged leather panel that is currently on the seat. It doesn't have to look great, just provide damage control. I would then fit the generic seat cover over the whole she-bang.

I know nothing about sewing leather. Is this feasable? Any experience or advice you can share is welcome.

Thanks,
Mason
