IAM 501 vs. 520 commutator 200 1986

Thanks to Fitz, I read his Mar 27 2004 post that a 520 replaces a 501. Anyone know the difference? They look identical. The commutator on mine had 1/32-inch deep grooves, so I went to Napa for replacement ($165 today). Given the fuction of this device, it's hard to believe they last even 50k miles-worth of idle.

I agree with another, Fitz's post should be added to the FAQ section (I assume 700-series are similar).
